Democratic congresswoman confirms engagement to Roberts, whom she met as a student at Boston University
Between visiting Amazon workers and promoting progressive candidates, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez got engaged to her longtime girlfriend Riley Roberts.
Ocasio-Cortez, 32, told Insider on Thursday that she and Roberts, who met at Boston University, got engaged last month while visiting her parents in Puerto Rico.
“It’s true!” she posted on Twitter. Thank you for your kind words.”
According to Insider, the couple kept their connection covert before Ocasio-Cortez became a well-known political figure, and their university acquaintances were not always aware of their relationship.
According to a biography published earlier this year by People magazine, Roberts has also been one of her strongest supporters throughout her career.
“What we do know about Roberts doesn’t fit the image of a politician’s partner,” writes Josh Gondelman in an essay for the editors of New York magazine’s Take Up Space: The Unprecedented AOC.
“For state dinners and press conferences, he doesn’t appear to be focus-grouped or media-trained.” In private, we know he’s supportive and encouraging,” Gondelman writes. “In terms of his public image, his expertise is his elusiveness and reserve.”
Roberts, a marketing specialist, has only appeared in the media a few times, usually with the couple’s dog, Deco, or in the 2018 documentary Knock Down the House.
Ocasio-Cortez said she and Roberts would wait at least a month to start arranging their wedding.
