So Many Babies by Dr. Susan Landers Provides Much-Needed Insight into the Realities of the NICU

Dr Susan Landers is a seasoned neonatologist with an extensive experience of 34 years under her belt. As such, the medical professional has seen her fair share of ups and downs in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). To show more people about the realities in the NICU, she has written the insightful book So Many Babies.

Over the years of practicing neonatology, this  outstanding physician has helped countless patients, from those with low birth weight and extreme prematurity to those with major congenital malformations or other critical care scenarios. In addition, she is an expert in breastfeeding medicine and human breastmilk banking.

In her critically acclaimed and engaging memoir, So Many Babies, neonatologist Susan Landers, MD, tells the stories of the close relationships that NICU staff and parents develop during some of the most distressing times of their sick children’s lives.

When asked what inspired her to write the piece, Dr Susan Landers said, “So Many Babies is about my 34-year-practice as a neonatologist taking care of sick babies in the NICU. My book relates stories about some incredibly special patients—some premature, some multiples, some born with severe birth defects, and their parents—each of whom touched me in profound ways.”

But aside from her perspective as an expert in the field, this extraordinary mother also shares her wonderful insight as a mother. She shared, “My book relates stories of my learning how to be a good enough mother raising three children of my own while practicing full time. My hope is that my motherhood journey will be reassuring to other working mothers. In addition, I think that other working mothers, especially career moms, who are trying to figure out how to balance work and mothering, will find my book helpful. I made plenty of mistakes along the way. If I can do it, so can they.”

On top of that, the memoir has masterfully captured the day-to-day activities of medical professionals. It has provided the much-needed insight that reveals the real struggles they go through while helping save tiny lives.

This awe-inspiring individual said, “The most challenging thing was working while physically and mentally exhausted, for example, enduring a grueling 24-hour-shift. Working in an environment with constant stress and noise can be nerve-wracking. Sometimes when the NICU was busy and monitors were alarming, the stimulation was overwhelming.”

So Many Babies also touches on the technological advancements that have changed and improved the face of neonatal medicine and high-risk obstetrics, such as infertility treatments and multiple births.

Above all, Dr Susan Landers hopes that her memoir will provide comfort to parents and mothers of preterm infants or babies with birth defects. With November being National Prematurity Awareness Month, the book is an excellent read. It is the perfect way to shed some light and start the important discussion regarding various health issues that newborn babies might face.Check out her official website to learn more about Dr Susan Landers and her book So Many Babies.
