In the heart of New Jersey, a unique cultural phenomenon is thriving, thanks to the visionary efforts of T. Shankaranarayanan Nandakumar (T S Nandakumar), a maestro in Indian classical music and the founder of TSN’s Percussive Arts Centre, Inc. (TSNPAC). With a rich legacy that traces back to the vibrant shores of Ambalappuzha, Kerala, Nandakumar has established himself as a global ambassador of Carnatic music, particularly in the realm of percussion.

A Legacy Rooted in Tradition

Born into the illustrious family of the Ambalapuzha Brothers, Nandakumar’s journey in music began at the tender age of four. Under the tutelage of Shri Kaithavana Madhavdas, he mastered the mridangam, an instrument pivotal to Carnatic music, in the traditional gurukula system. His prowess as a Laya Vidwan soon found him accompanying legends like M. Balamuralikrishna and K. J. Yesudas, earning him accolades as a consummate accompanist and a revered guru.

TSNPAC: A Beacon of Carnatic Percussion in the West

Founded in 1998 in Mumbai and later incorporated in New Jersey, TSNPAC emerged from Nandakumar’s vision to promote higher learning in the art of percussion and to propagate the rich traditions of Indian Carnatic music. The institute has not only been a platform for annual concerts featuring maestros like L. Subramaniam and A. Kanyakumari but has also facilitated a cultural dialogue by introducing Western musicians to Indian percussions.

Nandakumar’s pedagogical approach is distinguished by its inclusivity, welcoming students of all ages and backgrounds to explore the depths of Carnatic percussion. His dedication has culminated in the Guru Sishyas Talavadya Kutcheri Concept, where he leads his ensemble of students in performances that have captivated audiences at prestigious venues, including the Lincoln Center and the Cleveland Tyagaraja Festival.

Fostering Excellence Through Arangetrams

One of the hallmarks of TSNPAC is the arangetram or graduation concert, a rite of passage for students achieving mastery in their craft. These concerts are not merely performances but a testament to the students’ ability to accompany seasoned artists like A. Kanyakumari without prior rehearsals, showcasing their impromptu coordination and rhythmical precision. In 2022 alone, TSNPAC organized 15 arangetrams, a testament to Nandakumar’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of Carnatic musicians.

Honors and Recognition

Nandakumar’s contributions to the world of music have been widely recognized. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Shanti Foundation, Chennai, and the Best Teacher Award from the Cleveland Tyagaraja Group. These accolades underscore his role not just as a performer but as a dedicated educator and cultural ambassador.

A Cultural Icon in New Jersey and Beyond

Today, TSN’s Percussive Arts Centre stands as a beacon of Indian classical music in New Jersey, fostering a vibrant community of musicians and enthusiasts. Through his institute, Nandakumar continues to bridge cultures, creating a global family united by the universal language of music. As TSNPAC goes from strength to strength, its founder’s legacy endures, inspiring countless individuals to embark on their own musical journeys.
