Mythology permeates our cultural landscape, from blockbuster films to beloved video games, enriching narratives with timeless tales. In literature, these myths find a profound home, and Christopher Polidoro’s debut book “Tarot Stories,” which was recently highlighted in a notable news outlet., is set for release on July 30th, adds a fresh chapter to this enduring tradition. We sat down with Chris just weeks before the release to delve into his inspiration and his book’s innovative perspective on mythological storytelling.
“Tarot Stories” is a collection of short stories intricately woven around the symbolism of tarot cards. Each tale is a universe unto itself, uniquely themed and visually distinct, thanks to the artistic prowess of illustrators Kiersten Labbree and Natalie Leone. But what sets “Tarot Stories” apart is its concluding narrative, “Modern Mythology,” which reimagines Greek gods in a contemporary context.
“We wanted to evolve Greek mythology, not rehash it,” Chris explains. “What if these ancient gods wielded modern powers? Zeus, for instance, transcends being the god of lightning; he becomes the god of information, reflecting today’s digital age dominance. It’s a commentary on change, exploring how these deities adapt to modern challenges.”
Reflecting on this evolution is Sisyphus, the mythical figure condemned to eternal labor. “Sisyphus represents a counterbalance,” Chris muses. “Amidst gods grappling with change, he stands as a symbol of enduring tradition. His struggle mirrors our own quest for stability amidst constant flux.”
When asked about highlights and team contributions, Chris enthusiastically acknowledges Tyler Furey’s pivotal role in illustrating ‘Modern Mythology’. “Tyler’s artwork brings depth to our reinterpretation of the Underworld and the gods,” Chris praises. “His visual storytelling enriches the narrative, making it resonate on a visceral level.”
As “Tarot Stories” prepares to launch on July 30th, Chris invites readers to explore this imaginative tapestry of tales. “Each story offers a fresh perspective on familiar themes,” Chris invites. “From ancient curses to modern powers, the collection challenges readers to rethink mythology’s timeless allure.”
