Jennifer Aitken’s Shadow Storm: A YA Fantasy Adventure of Parallel Worlds, Myth, and Self-Discovery

By: Mark Peterson

Author Jennifer Aitken makes a striking entrance into the YA fantasy genre with Shadow Storm, the first novel in the Legends of Light & Shadows Saga. The book introduces readers to a high-stakes world of magic, parallel realities, and shifting identity, launching a series that currently spans four books.

Fast-paced and cinematic, Shadow Storm balances action with introspection, drawing readers into a universe where destiny is fluid, power must be earned, and every choice carries consequences that can alter the fate of more than one world.

A Parallel World And A Fractured Identity

At the center of Shadow Storm is Lucius Xavier, a teenager whose life changes when an ancient dagger pulls him into a parallel world. He awakens inside another version of himself—one hunted by a secret society convinced he holds the key to Atlantis. As Lucius grapples with lost memories and emerging powers, the stakes escalate beyond survival, threatening both worlds.

The premise raises an immediate question: what would it mean to confront another version of one’s own life? When asked what might be most surprising—or frightening—about such an experience, Aitken reflected, “If I could step into a parallel version of my life, I would hope my loved ones are there with me, and the biggest surprises would be the magic of a new environment. New creatures, new landscapes, and especially loved ones I’ve lost throughout the years are reincarnated in this new dimension.”

Growth Before Understanding

One of the novel’s defining narrative choices is Lucius’s lack of full self-knowledge. Rather than regaining his memories first, he must act and evolve without a complete understanding of who he once was. Aitken explained this decision as a deliberate part of his development. “I felt this was an important step for Lucius because if he spent his energies trying to remember his past life, he would miss out on the magic and possibilities in this new dimension,” she said. “By focusing on the past, he would risk not understanding or opening up to all the possibilities in front of him.”

Self-Doubt, Power, And Trusting The Journey

Despite the danger surrounding him, Lucius’s internal struggle remains grounded in self-doubt—a trait Aitken sees as deeply relatable. “I feel like Lucius’ self-doubt is very relatable. We all find ourselves in these moments, big or small,” she noted. Through Lucius’s gradual path toward confidence, the story emphasizes the importance of recognizing one’s own abilities. “I hope by reading through Lucius’ journey to self-confidence that we all see that by embracing and acknowledging our powers and talents, we can overcome anything.”

Weaving Ancient Myth Into A Modern Story

Atlantis plays a central role in the narrative, anchoring the story’s mythology and expanding its scope beyond a single world. Aitken’s interest in legends informs both the plot and character development. “I’ve always been fascinated by myths and legends, and my dream was to weave one of my favourites into a modern story,” she said. “I think many of the great books and movies available today have pulled from ancient myths, and I think it makes the characters so much more dynamic.”

Looking Ahead To Book Four

As the Legends of Light & Shadows Saga continues, Lucius’s evolution remains central. Book Four, currently in development, represents a turning point in his journey. “In Book 4 Lucius’ journey is reaching its climax. He has accomplished so much along the way and conquered his self-doubts, but there is much more for him to learn about what the Universe has planned for him,” Aitken explained. “I hope readers will see his growth and be rooting for him to eliminate the shadow energies so everyone can live in peace.”

A Saga Rooted In Choice And Transformation

With Shadow Storm, Jennifer Aitken opens a multi-book exploration of destiny, identity, and the power of choice. The novel stands as the first entry in a trilogy already available on Amazon, inviting readers to consider not only who Lucius might become, but how different versions of ourselves emerge when faced with the unknown.

Vulnerability Beneath the Glamour: Opening the Riches & Royals Series

By: Devon Wolfe

In a genre often driven by power fantasies and fairy-tale wealth, author Kelle Z. Riley takes a different approach. Her novel Read My Lips, the first installment in the Riches & Royals series, opens not with opulence but with vulnerability, introducing readers to characters whose emotional wounds matter far more than their social status.

Read My Lips follows Claire Lennox, a woman rebuilding her life after betrayal has cost her career, reputation, and trust. Now the director of a literacy foundation, Claire is determined to move forward until a charming new client challenges her resolve. That client, billionaire chocolatier Clayton McClaine, is hiding his own secret: a lifelong struggle with dyslexia that threatens the image he has carefully constructed for the world.

Choosing Vulnerability Over Power

For Riley, beginning the series with emotional fragility rather than wealth was a deliberate choice. “Power and wealth are often the drivers for a ‘Cinderella’ story, but without adding a deeper context, the story risks becoming a cliché,” she explains. “No one has a perfect life, not even a billionaire tycoon hero.”

By focusing on character flaws and inner conflicts, Riley aims to create stories that resonate on a human level. “We all have vulnerabilities, and seeing that reality reflected in the characters from a story helps us connect with them and their journey on an emotional level.”

Two Characters Guarding Different Wounds

The pairing of Claire and Clayton brings together two people protecting themselves in very different ways. Claire’s wounds are visible, shaped by betrayal and public loss, while Clayton’s are hidden behind privilege and success.

Riley notes that this dynamic reflects a broader cultural reality. “Most people… want the world to see them as successful and confident. But the deep secret we all share is that everyone has a voice inside insisting they are a fraud or an imposter.”

At the core of their relationship is the need to be fully seen. “Real love and connection are, and always have been, about someone seeing you with all of your vulnerabilities, flaws, and weaknesses, and still loving you,” Riley says. “Love doesn’t require success; it requires emotional honesty.”

Portraying Dyslexia with Care and Authenticity

One of the novel’s most distinctive elements is Clayton’s dyslexia, which plays a central role in his character arc. Riley approached this aspect with extensive research and care. “Portraying Clayton’s dyslexia was a risk when I first wrote the story,” she admits.

Through her research, Riley discovered how adaptive those coping strategies can be. “Those who have dyslexia often have superb memories, which may lead to some amazing successes.” She also explored different learning styles, including the connection between touch and learning, weaving these insights directly into the story.

Once she understood how dyslexia affects people, Riley explains, “it was a simple matter of making that the core of Clayton’s vulnerabilities, the thing he wanted to hide from the world.”

The Cost of Secrecy and the Path to Honesty

Much of the tension in Read My Lips arises from what Riley describes as the “billion-dollar deception” at the heart of Clayton’s disguise. While secrecy may feel protective early on, the novel explores how it ultimately undermines intimacy.

“Secret keeping may be fine at the beginning of a relationship, but honesty is required for intimacy to grow into love,” Riley says. As the story unfolds, the consequences of avoidance compound. “In essence, every lie makes the truth that much harder to tell.”

Setting the Foundation for the Series

As the opening novel in a four-part series, Read My Lips establishes themes that continue throughout Riches & Royals. Riley intentionally turns familiar romance tropes on their head. “Rather than a cardboard prince or billionaire who saves the heroine, I crafted a heroine who saves the prince/billionaire.”

Readers can expect strong, spunky women who challenge the powerful men in their lives to grow emotionally, not just professionally. Disguises, both literal and emotional, remain a recurring motif throughout the series.

Connecting with Readers Beyond the Page

Beyond her fiction, Riley actively engages with readers through live events and conventions. After reader-focused appearances in the Orlando area at the end of 2025 and early 2026, she is preparing for a busy year of events across the Southeast.

Readers can follow her work, upcoming appearances, and additional information through her website, where she also invites fans to join her mailing list and stay connected.

The Sweet Side of the South: Atlanta’s Jardi Chocolates Elevates Valentine’s Day

For many, Valentine’s Day is synonymous with a last-minute trip to the grocery store for a heart-shaped box of mass-produced candy. However, in Atlanta, a growing movement of artisan confectioners is challenging the status quo. Leading the charge this year is Jardi Chocolates, a boutique chocolatier that has become the centerpiece of the city’s holiday celebrations. By blending high-concept culinary art with traditional techniques, founder Jocelyn Gragg is proving that chocolate isn’t just a gift—it’s an experience.

The Artisan Revolution in Chamblee

Located in the Chamblee neighborhood of Atlanta, Jardi Chocolates operates on a philosophy of “quality over quantity.” While industrial chocolate often relies on high sugar content and vegetable oils to maintain shelf life, Jardi focuses on the purity of the bean. The shop’s rise to prominence in 2026 is no accident; it is the result of years of refinement by Gragg, a former pastry chef who traded restaurant kitchens for the precision of the tempering marble.

“We want people to taste the actual cocoa, not just the sugar,” Gragg noted during a recent feature on ATL Live (February 11, 2026). “Every piece we make is hand-painted and hand-tempered. When you see a bonbon that looks like a piece of marble or a galaxy, it’s because someone spent hours making sure that specific shell was perfect.”

The 2026 Valentine’s Collection: A Flavor Journey

This year’s artisan treats are designed to be more than just sweets; they are curated tasting flights. The 2026 Valentine’s collection, which launched on February 1, features a mixture of classic comforts and experimental pairings.

The standout of the season is the “Southern Romance” box. It features flavors that pay homage to the region, such as bourbon-infused dark chocolate and honey-lavender ganache. For the more adventurous palate, the collection includes a passion fruit and pink peppercorn truffle, offering a sharp, bright contrast to the rich milk chocolate coating.

The visual appeal is equally important. In the world of artisan chocolate, the “snap” and the “shine” are the hallmarks of quality. A perfectly tempered chocolate bar should have a glossy finish and break with a crisp sound. At Jardi, each bonbon is decorated with colored cocoa butter, creating a jewel-box effect when the lid is first opened.

Why Artisan Matters

In an era where consumers are increasingly conscious of where their food comes from, Jardi Chocolates hits a sweet spot. By using ethically sourced cocoa and supporting local dairy farmers for their ganache fillings, the business provides a transparency that big-box brands cannot match.

Industry experts suggest that this shift toward “slow food” in the confectionery world is here to stay. According to a recent report by National Today regarding holiday spending habits, “Consumers are moving away from ‘filler’ gifts. They would rather buy a small, four-piece box of exceptional, hand-crafted chocolates than a giant box of something mediocre. It’s about the intentionality of the gift.”

The Challenges of Craftsmanship

Running an artisan chocolate shop during the busiest week of the year is no small feat. The process of making a single batch of bonbons can take up to three days. First, the molds must be polished to a mirror shine. Then comes the decorative painting, followed by the casting of the chocolate shells. Only then can the ganache—the creamy center—be piped in. After the centers have set overnight, the chocolates are capped with a final layer of chocolate.

Despite the labor-intensive nature of the work, the demand in Atlanta has never been higher. Local residents have embraced the “click-and-collect” model, allowing them to skip the shipping delays that often plague the mid-February rush.

The “ATL Live” Spotlight

The buzz around Jardi reached a fever pitch this week following their television appearance. During the segment, the focus was not just on the final product, but on the science of chocolate. Gragg demonstrated how temperature control is the most critical factor in chocolate making. If the chocolate is off by even one or two degrees during the tempering process, it will lose its shine and become soft or “bloomed” with white streaks.

“It is a balance of chemistry and art,” Gragg explained. “You have to respect the ingredients. If you treat the cocoa bean with respect, it rewards you with incredible flavor.”

A Growing Culinary Scene

Jardi is part of a larger, vibrant ecosystem of chocolatiers in Georgia. Along with others like Xocolatl and Cacao & Cardamom, they are putting Atlanta on the map as a destination for chocolate lovers. These businesses often collaborate, sharing a goal of educating the public on what “real” chocolate should taste like.

As Valentine’s Day 2026 approaches, the message from Atlanta’s artisans is clear: the best way to show affection is through something made by hand. Whether it is a single bar of single-origin dark chocolate or an elaborate box of hand-painted truffles, the effort behind the gift is what truly resonates.
