Dick dropped out of high school and tried to enlist in the US Army Air Forces so he could fly in World War II, but he was repeatedly turned down. Eventually, he was approved as a radio announcer and transferred to the Special Service to perform for the troops stationed in the US. Eventually, in 2004, at the age of 78, he earned his high school GED.
