In the world of gospel music, few names command as much respect and admiration as JJ Hairston and his acclaimed ensemble, Youthful Praise. With a career spanning over three decades, Hairston’s influence on the genre is undeniable. In his latest endeavor Hairston is once again taking on the role of judge for the illustrious How Sweet The Sound gospel music competition for the third consecutive year.

How Sweet The Sound, a celebration of gospel music, spoken word, and dance, has been a staple in the industry since its inception in 2007. After a decade-long hiatus and under the ownership of Gentle Giant Music Ministries, helmed by CEO Nathanael Brown, the competition has grown to international acclaim, and boasts a lineup with an esteemed host and judges.

Joining Hairston on the judging panel are gospel artists Tamela Mann, Hezekiah Walker, Jonathan McReynolds, Ricky Dillard, and the incomparable Donald Lawrence, who serves as the longtime host of the event. With such a stellar lineup, contestants can expect invaluable feedback and guidance from some of the most revered figures in the gospel music industry.

“Often we talk about David, the musician and psalmist, from the bible,” say Hairston. “He was skillful and anointed. So as much as we pray, fast, and prepare spiritually. We also have to prepare in skills with practice – to get ready for what we are going to do on stage – because it takes courage, boldness, and preparation.”

Hairston’s impact extends far beyond the stage, as evidenced by his numerous accolades and achievements. From Billboard chart-toppers like “You Deserve It” to a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Performance/Song, Hairston’s influence resonates with audiences worldwide.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Hairston has ventured into entrepreneurship, serving as the CEO and founder of Jamestown Music, a label distributed by Entertainment One. With a vision to create music that fosters a deeper connection with the divine, Hairston’s contributions to the industry continue to inspire and uplift.

As How Sweet The Sound prepares to embark on its latest chapter, the competition is set to reach new heights with a global expansion spanning two continents. Grammy Award-winning songwriter and record producer Donald Lawrence will host both the U.S. and London competitions, showcasing the diverse talent that defines gospel music on an international stage.

The competition’s sponsors, including P&G, Glory Foods, Compassion International, the Ad Council, and the Huntsman Mental Health Institute’s  “Love, Your Mind” campaign, reflects a commitment to corporate social responsibility. Through other initiatives like the “What Feeds Your Soul?” campaign with Glory Foods, sponsors aim to nourish not only the body but also the mind and spirit.

This year, gospel music enthusiasts will have the opportunity to experience How Sweet The Sound like never before, thanks to a national television distribution deal with FOX Soul. With the competition airing on various digital platforms, including Samsung TV Plus, ROKU, YouTube, and more, audiences worldwide can witness the gospel music competition  unfold in real-time.
